Following a review, the teacher who was suspended after showing children a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad can return to teaching. The incident at Batley Grammar School sparked received international attention. However, a review into the conduct of the teacher in question has now concluded that he didn’t intend to cause offence.
UNN’s Oliver Down understands that the teacher involved has is still in hiding at a secret location with his family. At this stage it is also unlikely that he will return to Batley Grammar School. The Batley Multi Academy Trust who run Batley Grammar School have said that the topics covered by the lesson ‘could have been effectively addressed in other ways and without using the image’. However, the review has found that the teacher and his two colleagues who had showed similar images, ‘genuinely believed’ using the image had educational purposes.
A spokeswoman for the Batley Multi Academy Trust has said: ‘We accept the recommendations of the independent expert investigation and will put them into practice immediately. The investigation recommends that the issues raised can be effectively dealt with through additional management guidance and training’.
Kim Leadbeater who is the Labour candidate for the by-election in the Batley and Spen constituency as well as the sister of Jo Cox has as said that it was ‘completely unacceptable that a teacher was forced into hiding and his family were put at risk’.
