Teenage girl gives birth to child of rapist who “destroyed her life”

A teenage girl has been forced to give birth to her rapist’s baby. The identity of the offender was only known following the birth of the baby and a subsequent DNA test. Once the test was taken it was revealed that the child’s father was Quaser Abas, 37. On Friday Mr Abas was found guilty of rape following a weeklong trial at Hull Crown Court and was jailed for 12 years. The court was told that the young girl went for a routine hospital check and was told she was 23 weeks pregnant. Following the baby’s birth, a DNA test was taken which revealed the baby’s father was Mr Abas. Mr Abas told the court the test was “contaminated”.

Mr Abas also told the court that the testimonies given by the girl and her mother during police interviews were “fabricated and concocted”. For the prosecution, Mark McKone read out a victim statement from the girl, who said Abas has “destroyed her life” as well as “I didn’t want a baby at this age, I didn’t want it to happen the way it did. I was scared to tell my mum. When I found out I was pregnant I was shocked and scared to tell anyone and was scared about what they might say and think. I didn’t want the baby but now it is here I wouldn’t change it for the world. I get upset having to think about it”. 

The court heard a statement from the girl’s mother which read: “I can’t speak to her about it or speak about what happened. I thought she was safe. I can never get over it and need to ask why he did it. It would have been hard enough for her to have a child, never mind at this age. He has taken her childhood away from her. She has had to grow up so fast. I was there during the birth and it was so horrible watching her go through that, knowing I couldn’t do anything. He’s destroyed our family. One day we will have to tell the child what happened. I try not to think about it because when I do, I feel like I’m going to cry, and I love my grandchild now it’s here, but I can’t think about it because I would resent it.”

However, the court was told there could still be a chance for the convicted rapist Mr Abas to have a relationship with the baby. The judge Mr David Tremberg told the jury that, once released Mr Abas could apply for contact, and that would be the decision of the family court rather than the criminal courts. The defence lawyer Matthew Burden told the court that Mr Abas was of “previous good character”. Whilst summing up the judge stated “you took the opportunity to rape her, having full, unprotected sexual intercourse. She told you “no”, but you pressed on and she simply submitted. Mr Abas was will serve half of his 12-year sentence in prison and half on licence in the community.
