A court has been told that a 16-year-old nursery worker allegedly raped and sexually assaulted eight children aged between two and four whilst at work. Jayden McCarthy who is now 18 has been accused of using his position as a childcare apprentice in Torquay to carry out a series of sexual assaults against children in July 2019.
Jurors at Exeter Crown Court were informed that McCarthy was arrested after a little girl informed her parents that McCarthy had performed a sex act on her. The prosecution has said: ‘These assaults were of a varying degree ranging from touching the child over their clothing in their private areas and an instance of oral rape putting his penis into the mouth of a little girl’.
Following the alleged incidents coming to light, McCarthy was suspended and asked to leave whilst an investigation was launched. Prosecutors heard that McCarthy was arrested and that he argued that he had changed the little girl that day in a toilet because he was not supposed to change a child in front of the CCTV cameras. He denied exposing himself or sexually assaulting the child.
Police have examined 250 hours of CCTV, where 13 incidents were identified. Jurors were told: ‘The defendant was caught on CCTV sexually assaulting children on various days over a period of 10-29th July. There were eight children involved and they were aged between two and four’.
Jayden McCarthy denies three rapes of a child and 13 counts of sexual assault of a child under the age of 13. The trial continues.
