A popular and well respected Birmingham councillor was slashed by a knife-wielding robber at his shop in Handsworth today.
Councillor Chaman Lal represents the Labour Party. Both he and his wife were viciously attacked with a knife while working at their fruit and veg shop.
A woman and a man stormed the store at 12.15pm this afternoon (Sunday, September 23) before threatening and attacking Chaman and his wife. He was cut in the hand and both he and his wife were taken to hospital.
The Birmingham Mail reported:
Crystal clear CCTV footage from within the shop, shown above, captured the terrifying ordeal as it unfolded on Sandwell Road.
The robbers are first seen entering the store, picking up a couple of items, as they pretend to shop.
As the woman lingers near the exit, the man suddenly turns towards Chaman and reaches into his trouser pocket.
He then pulls out a huge butchers knife and lunges it forward at the victim.
Meanwhile the female offender is trying to get into the cash register. She is also then seen hitting the councillor. The pair – a black male with glasses and a white female with black hair – are believed to have fled empty handed.
The councillor’s son, Bal, is offering a £1,000 reward to anyone who can supply information to identify those responsible.
“They pretended to buy something, they tried to rob something then they pulled a knife out on my parents. They tried to go for the cash register. My parents tried to fight back but they were overwhelmed.
West Midlands Police said in a statement:
A woman and a man armed with a knife stormed into the store at around 12.15pm this afternoon (23 September). Two people who work at the store were threatened and attacked. They both sustained minor injuries and have been taken to hospital for treatment. The suspects fled and reportedly boarded the 101 bus heading towards town.
The man has been described as black, aged in his 40’s tall and slim.Witnesses described the woman as white, with a large build and dark hair in a messy bun.Police are liaising with Safer Travel colleagues, and are in the process of downloading CCTV from the store.
