The 23rd of September saw the 8th of 10 regional Brexit party conferences. UNN’S Oliver Down was present at the Westpoint arena in Exeter which was the venue for a near-capacity crowd. Having naively listened to the mainstream media narrative that Brexiteer’s are demographically older I was struck by a fair splattering of younger people in the audience, many of which were very engaged in events.
Richard Tice opened the event with a boxer style entrance with accompanying music. He gave a cool and calculated account of the current situation as he saw it. He was seeking to outline policies away from Brexit in a clear attempt to stop the Brexit Party becoming a single-issue party. Mr Tice spoke of “scrapping the ridiculous HS2” which was met by a rousing round of applause.
The second speaker needed very little introduction, described by Richard Tice as “no waffle Widders”. Anne Widdecombe made her way to the stage surrounded by several bodyguards and placed her handbag into Mr Tice’s hands for him to look after. The tempo of the room immediately lifted. Mrs Widdecombe spoke of the “abject failure to act upon the biggest popular vote in our nation’s history”. The speeches were described by the Brexit Party prospective Parliamentary candidate Dawn Westcott as “air-punching enthusiasm and belly laughs to incredulity and distain at the great Brexit betrayal”.

Alexander Waugh then took the stage. Mr Waugh, a writer, critic and academic amongst other things is standing as a prospective Brexit party parliamentary candidate in Bridgewater and West Somerset. Mr Waugh instantly gripped the room, his passion resonated with the room, his comedic irony was sublime, and his articulation was a splendour to behold. Mr Waugh had the audience on its feet when he stated “ it was extremely courageous of 17.4 million people to throw back the ludicrous hideous pompous and completely inaccurate rubbish of project fear right back in the faces of the prime minister the treasurer the CBI the BBC and the President of the United States”.
Two further speeches took place before the leader of the Brexit Party Nigel Farage took to the stage. Mr Farage spoke of his mistake at spending two years out of British politics as he thought his “life’s work was complete”. Mr Farage also slammed the British establishment when he exclaimed ‘how dare they suggest that 17.4 million people are knuckle-dragging thick peasants’, as well as denouncing a “little pipsqueak from Belgium” who Mr Farage felt was rude to Boris Johnson last week.
Dawn Westcott exclusively told UNN that “There was a real buzz at The Brexit Party South West conference, with electric speeches from Ann Widdecombe (SW MEP), Alexander Waugh (Bridgwater & West Somerset PPC), Christina Jordan (SW MEP), Nigel Farage and Ken Hockley (Exeter PPC), introduced and linked by Chairman, Richard Tice”. It is very difficult to disagree with this assessment of proceedings yesterday afternoon.
