The Confusion of the Stop the War Movement

James De Burghe January 6th 2024

It is a sad reflection on western society that so many left wing academics and activists have allowed their judgement to be swayed by the propaganda machine of the western warmongers. They buy the idea, hook line and sinker,  that Russia is responsible for the war in Ukraine and it was caused by Russian aggression. Nothing could be further from the truth or from cold hard facts.

During January 2022 the Ukraine government had amassed 134,000 troops along the border with the breakaway regions of Donetsk and Lugansk.

In the previous 8 years, since the coup that drove out the legal government of Ukraine, there had been shelling of these regions by the Ukrainian Army, trained and armed by NATO, and some areas had been occupied by Ukraine Army units including several of the Neo-Nazi battalions. We know from the eye witness accounts of journalists and reports by UNHRC that atrocities were committed by these troops in the Donbass region. All told between 2014 and 2022 between 14000 and 16000 civilians in the Donbass region were killed by the Ukraine army units. It was the publicly stated policy of the Ukrainian Government that the ethic Russian population of southern Ukraine, which made up the majority of the population in those areas should be ‘eliminated’ or driven to flee into Russia.

Now imagine what would have happened if the Russians had not intervened and prevented the intended massacre. The stated policy of the Ukraine Government was to de-populate the Donbass. In effect this would have meant a mass genocide of the Russian speaking population of the area. They intended to attack the cities with air power, armour and artillery and then send in infantry to mop up the survivors.  What is worse is that the USA, UK, and the EU knew what they intended to do, and had provided them with military assistance, training, weapons and intelligence. The follow up would have been a bombardment of Crimea, again aimed at inflicting maximum casualties on the civilian population, followed up by a military assault. All told civilian casualties would have run into the hundreds of thousands. You can be very sure that if Russia had stood back and done nothing to prevent this from happening the very same people now condemning Russia for its actions would have been condemning Russian for inaction.

The NATO/Ukraine strategy came to nought when Russia launched it special military operation, forcing Ukraine to divide its armed forces to defend the feints against Kiev. This gave the Russian army and the Donbas militias time to mount an effective offensive that decimated the remainder of the Ukraine army facing the Donbass and the eliminated several battalions of the Neo Nazi troops employed by Ukraine. The trained and seasoned Ukraine army has largely been destroyed in a war of attrition, that destroyed their air support and subjected them to harrowing artillery bombardments. Their replacements made up of conscripts, and the old men and young boys of the territorial army were just cannon fodder for the Russian artillery, armour, and infantry. The US and EU countries supplied yet more weapons to Ukraine as well as cash. The US supplied long range Himar rocket systems that were meant to be used to hold the Russian troops at bay, but have been in fact used to bombard the civilian population of the Donbass and Russian villages just over the border from Ukraine. The Ukraine Government boasted that it would launch offensives to regain territory, including Crimea as a means of getting yet more weapons and cash from the west. The Ukraine conscripts being poorly trained in the EU and UK are not keeping pace with the battlefield losses.  Each new weapon supplied by the west, the artillery, the tanks, the rockets, are hailed as a game changer, but all of them have failed to change the course of the conflict except to kill more Russian civilians.

Ukraine was infamous for the level of corruption in its government, therefore it is no surprise to learn that considerable numbers of the weapons supplied to Ukraine by the west have ended up on the black market, supplying terror groups and criminals including Mexican drug cartels. Likewise there appears to be a lot of cash ‘vanishing’ from Ukraine via money laundering.

Now we hear the stop the war movement crying out for a ceasefire. They seem to ignore the fact that Ukraine has made any attempt to negotiate with Russia a criminal offence of high treason. Equally they forget that all previous agreements made since 2014 (the so called Minsk agreements) were actually false agreements made to allow Ukraine time to train and increase the size of its army with help from NATO, a fact admitted by both  Germany’s Merkel and France’s Hollande, and confirmed by the then President of Ukraine, Poroshenko. Who then should Russia negotiate with? Why would Russia trust the word of any western power after the betrayal of the Minsk agreements?

The west deliberately armed and trained a fanatical and manic Nazi-like Ukraine with the hope of goading Russia into a conflict which they hoped would destroy Russia economically, politically and militarily. The secondary objective was to cause a split in the China/Russia detente. The goading worked but not anything else. Russia therefore has no choice but to complete the aims of its special military operation, which are straightforward and well publicised. To de-Nazify Ukraine, and to ensure that in the future it will remain a neutral state without membership of NATO or the EU and the recognition of those areas of Ukraine that voted to rejoin the Russian Federation.. It will continue its military operations until those objectives are achieved.

And what is the Ukraine that these peace activists want to preserve? A state that has banned all opposition, political parties, banned all non government controlled media, banned workers rights, banned free speech, banned freedom of worship, carries out terrorist acts in Russia and on its own people and which allows its security services to carry out execution without any due process of law. A country so unpleasant to live in that millions of its citizens had fled abroad before the conflict with Russia had even begun. The Ukraine population was near 44 million in 1991, now it has shrunk to 21 million. A country so careless with the lives of its citizens that it conscripts old men and teenagers and send them to fight with little training and inadequate weapons.

No, good people, if you want peace then stop your government from sending arms and ammunition to this conflict which merely lengthens the agony of the of those Ukraine conscripts and is leading that country into a demographic nightmare. Oppose the policies that are destroying the economies of your own countries, increasing poverty and destroying jobs. Hold your politicians accountable for failing to protect your interests and well being above the policy dictates of the United States of America.

Get your priorities right attack the western warmongers that started this war, not the Russians who stepped in and prevented the worst genocide in Europe since the second world war.
