A fascinating phenomenon has emerged from Thursday’s General election results. The Labour party and the Liberal Democrats were ravaged by the ‘curse of Hugh Grant’. Every single candidate the actor campaigned with lost or was unseated. Mr Grant who is 59 and an ardent Remainer canvassed with several remain supporting MPs in the period leading up to the election.
As the exit poll was released at 10 pm on Thursday Mr Grant tweeted: “There goes the neighbourhood.” The candidates that Hugh Grant failed help significantly were Luciana Berger in Finchley who lost. Chukka Umunna received the career kiss-of-death as the MP lost his parliament place by failing to secure City of London for the Lib Dems after canvassing with Mr Grant. In addition to this, Mr Grant canvassed with Labour candidate Faiza Shaheen in Chingford as she was beaten by Tory veteran Brexiteer MP Iain Duncan-Smith. Lib Dem candidate Monica Harding attempted to unseat foreign secretary Dominic Raab, in Esher and Walton constituency but was also unsuccessful. A bad night for Mr Grant one could say.
As reported by the Sun the Four Weddings star was looking downbeat whilst sat in a London tapas bar at around 10pm on Thursday with his wife Anna Eberstein. A source told the Sun “He and his wife sat at the bar and he looked increasingly glum as the night went on. They had beer and red wine and went home pretty quickly after the exit poll.” As the results neared confirmation Mr Grant criticised the electoral system that had failed to return the result he wanted before linking Boris Johnson’s victory to Germany’s far-right. He retweeted: “Germany’s far-right AfD congratulates Boris Johnson and wishes him success with Brexit.” Some may suggest that sour grapes is not a good look!
