The question ‘what is Boris Johnson for?’ must be increasingly asked by many people. Our mop-headed apology for a Prime Minister has abrogated his responsibility to lead the country. Instead, leadership seems to be exercised by the mendacious medic and the slippery scientist, Messrs Whitty and Vallance, respectively. Both of these people are guilty of deliberately using misleading statistics to strike fear into the British population, and have admitted it. But Boris blunders on, allowing the mission to drift from being vehemently opposed to a second lockdown to instituting a third and seemingly endless lockdown. Now he is convinced a third wave of COVID-19 is on the way against the advice of some scientists. Then we have vaccine passports to which Johnson was opposed, but now appears to have backtracked.
Vaccine passports raise an interesting spectre in British life. If other jurisdictions are going to require proof of vaccination for entry to their countries, then there is little that our government can do about it. But Johnson now seems to think it will be acceptable if some pubs and sports and entertainment venues in Britain will require vaccine passports for entry. If ever a wedge had a thin end that was going to become thick very quickly then this is it. If one pub chain does it, they all will; if one football league does it, the rest will. And you can imagine how the luvvies of the entertainment industry will react. They have been virtue signalling throughout and top stars, the ones who require bowls of Smarties in their dressing rooms with the orange-coloured ones removed, will probably refuse to perform unless the whole cast, the theatre staff and the audience are all vaccinated and can prove it. Even the redoubtable Tim Martin, owner of Wetherspoons, while opposed to vaccine passports, says he may in the end have no choice. Let us hope it does not come to that, but it is looking increasingly likely.
Surely Johnson and the British government have it in their power to say ‘no’ to vaccine passports. The whole concept of having to prove your status immediately on request in these shores is alien and that includes identity and health status. In fact, this government contains most of the people who were opposed to ID cards. The excuse being used, and being considered by Michael Gove in his review of the possibility of vaccine passports, is that having them may give people the confidence to venture out again to social venues and also give the staff confidence to work there. Apart from the complete lack of logic here given that the government also claim we have effective vaccines against COVID-19—they are either effective or they are not—why should anyone care about giving other people confidence and losing an important aspect of our freedom in the process? It may seem harsh, but if people are too frightened to leave their houses or come to work, when the risk is nil to negligible, then they can stay at home or be sacked. Once they realise that the bodies are not piling up on the street corners, they will soon some out of hiding again.
The British government, seems have no problem passing legislation these days; during the pandemic it has passed new laws on average every four days. Then why not make it illegal right now in Britain to introduce vaccine passports and illegal to require anyone to have to produce proof of vaccination status to engage in their normal social life. This law should cover British based airlines such as British Airways and for international airlines that are going to insist on vaccine passports for boarding, ban them from our airspace. Think we can’t do it? Well, we just did it for over a year. Qantas Airlines—you’ll be first.
