Time to ask for the people’s consent on the Coronavirus Act

By Anthony Webber:

After the shameful behaviour of the House of Commons in nodding through a further six months renewal of the Coronavirus Act without any recorded vote, it is time the people had their say.

This Coronavirus Act which commenced on 25th March 2020, supposedly for only three weeks, has been like a never ending story, and a nightmare one at that.

At no time has this draconian piece of legislation, nor the misuse of the 1984 Public Health Act, been agreed upon by the British electorate.

Over the last nineteen months the British public have been subjected to the most draconian and authoritarian dictates, worse than experienced during the Second World War.

It is clear that this issue is a cross party one, as the main Opposition parties continue to support the Coronavirus Act, in whichever variation it is in.

Thus MPs are not representing the public, and this is clearly a major issue which should be decided by a UK wide national referendum.

There is a Petition to Parliament seeking such a referendum, and in only just over three weeks, it has achieved over 70,000 signatures.

It only needs 100,000 to qualify for a Parliamentary debate, and this is final opportunity for MPs to redeem themselves.

A referendum is necessary because:

1.)  The Coronavirus Act and all the covid-19 policies of the government urgently require free and open two sided debate ( which has been denied from the beginning by a government using emergency and other powers to control the media).

2.) Those who offer alternative policies which protect rights, freedoms and liberties have an excellent chance of winning

3.) The Referendum is absolutely necessary to seek the consent of the electorate on the imposition of the Coronavirus Act on them.

4.) Without a Referendum on this issue, there is no democracy in the UK.

5.) At least one other country has already had a Referendum on this issue.

The Petition now has an added reason to sign it- that people are fed up with the contempt Parliament is showing them and demand that their voice is heard and actioned on !
