A Tory MP has been accused of breaking coronavirus rules to attend a Christmas party has been widely slammed this morning via social media and the Home Secretary. The Bournemouth East MP Tobias Ellwood had previously warned people to strictly observe the COVID rules but is now under fire for attending a Christmas gathering with 27 guests at a London club.
Ellwood chairs the Commons defence committee, and he gave a speech at the Cavalry and Guards Club in Piccadilly on Tuesday where the Iraq Britain Business Council hosted a Christmas gathering with 27 guests. The backbencher’s defence was that “business meetings” are allowed under Tier 2 restrictions, which applied at the time.
This event came 24 hours after Ellwood told the Commons on Monday that letting families meet over the festive period “could be very dangerous indeed”. Mahyar Tousi has reacted to this news by saying: “This is the same Tobias Ellwood who’s been pushing for more lockdown restrictions and even wants Boris to cancel Christmas. The list of hypocrites is getting bigger in 2020”.
The Home secretary Priti Patel has also blasted Elwood. She states that she agrees that this was an “egregious” breach of the rules and said: “Of course it is exactly that”. When asked if there should be a punishment for Elwood Patel said: “There are fixed penalty notices. I don’t know the details as to where this happened or the location, but I’m sure, as it is a breach, that will be followed up”.
