The controversial former Prime Minister Tony Blair has taken a swipe at Britain’s response to Covid-19. He has said it “isn’t good enough” as well as predicting that it may take two or three years to finally defeat the coronavirus.
Blair has said that from the very start of the crisis Boris Johnson’s Conservative party government has been “behind the curve not in front of it”. He has also described the need, he feels, for action “on a radically bigger and better scale than at present”. Blair has written : “The system will say it’s doing the best it can on all fronts. The stark truth is that this best isn’t good enough. This crisis isn’t ending soon; and the economic and health damage of prolonged lockdown is frightening”.
Reports have been emerging that Blair could be set to make a political comeback. In response to these reports, he has said: “The only comeback I am interested in is for our country to return to as near normal as quickly as possible so people can live their lives safely and our economy can get back on track”.
Blair has described a proposal for a voluntary “Covid Pass” for those people who have been vaccinated and tested negative. The former PM has stated that this would give them access to big events “from attending an O2 concert to the FA Cup Final”. The Government are currently denying reports that they are looking at a Covid “passport” that would carry similar privileges.
