Reports are emerging that Britain’s civil servants are demanding that the Churchill room in the Treasury, which is named after Britain’s wartime Prime Minister, is renamed according to reports. Winston Churchill played a leading role in defeating Nazi Germany as Prime Minister between 1940 to 1945.
However, recently he has come under criticism for alleged racism. Only last month the statue of Mr Churchill in Parliament Square was vandalised by a Black Lives Matter protestor with the words “was a racist”. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has written a biography on Winston Churchill is an admirer of Britain’s wartime PM.
The statue was boarded up to prevent further vandalism although this has since been removed. In addition to this, fresh reports are emerging that a number of junior Treasury officers have stated that they “do not feel comfortable” with the naming of the Churchill Room. These concerns were aired during a meeting with the Treasury equalities team
However, UNN’s Oliver Down understands that these concerns are currently being rejected by Ministers who say there is no plan for a name change at this time. Only back in May the Chancellor Rishi Sunak offered his thoughts on the Churchill Room when he said: “It is called the Churchill Room because it is the balcony where Winston Churchill stood and addressed the crowds. He spoke to a sea of people stretching all the way down Whitehall and into Parliament Square. After six years of horror, hardship and grief when so many sacrificed so much, people came together in a collective moment of joy and relief”.
