The UK will now be in “full control of our destiny” as the deadline to request a Brexit delay was ignored by Boris Johnson’s government in a symbolic move. The transition period will now officially end on December 31 meaning that the EU will now no longer have any influence on UK domestic policy.
Law and policy commentator for the Financial Times David Green tweeted: “The deadline for an extension of the Brexit Transition Period has officially passed.
“Roll on an independent United Kingdom. Midnight. The option has now expired for the United Kingdom to extend the Brexit transition period.
“The transition period will now end, by automatic operation of law, on 31 December 2020.”
Another happy Brexiteer posted to social media: “The deadline for an extension of the #Brexit Transition Period was 23:00 on 30th June 2020. That deadline has now expired.
“The Transition period will end on 31st December 2020 and we have the chance to become a truly democratic nation with full control of our own destiny.”
Prime Minister Mr Johnson confirmed the UK would not extend the transition period in hopes that a deal can be reached with the EU. Many remain supporters, however, were not happy with the news with many saying they will campaign for the UK to rejoin the EU.
