United Kingdom set to become biggest country donor to the World Health Organisation

The United Kingdom is set to become the biggest country donor to the World Health Organisation, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to announce, according to reports from the Telegraph.

It is understood the Prime Minister will announce the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland will become the largest country donor to the W.H.O, however British officials have made clear the extra funding is conditional on the body improving its response to future pandemics.

Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the PM is set to reveal that the UK will pledge £340 million to the global health body over the next four years, a 30 per cent increase on its previous contribution.

The move comes after a large funding gap was left when United States President Donald J Trump decision to pull the USA out of the W.H.O over its handling of the pandemic.

Whitehall sources have suggested the PM’s speech would strike a different tone to President Trump’s speech earlier this week, during which he hit out at China for its role in the crisis and demanded that the UN hold it “accountable.”

According to the same reports, Mr Johnson will also announce £71 million in additional funding for COVAX, the international coronavirus vaccines pool, helping to secure 27 million more vaccine doses for the UK.

The Prime Minister is set to say: “After nine months of fighting Covid, the very notion of the international community looks tattered,

“We know that we cannot continue in this way. Unless we unite and turn our fire against our common foe, we know that everyone will lose.

“Now is the time therefore – here at what I devoutly hope will be the first and last ever Zoom UNGA –  for humanity to reach across borders and repair these ugly rifts.

“Here in the UK, the birthplace of Edward Jenner who pioneered the world’s first vaccine, we are determined to do everything in our power to work with our friends across the UN to heal those divisions and to heal the world.”
