The UK’s chief negotiator jsensationally enquired as to whether he could obtain Belgian citizenship after Brexit, according to his controversial EU counterpart., Guy Verhofstadt.
Behind-the-scenes footage shot for the explosive BBC documentary shows Verhofstadt, a former Belgian prime minister, retelling a story about Olly Robbins to his colleagues.
“Olly Robbins came to me and said ‘Guy, can I become a Belgium citizen after this whole thing because I don’t think I will return’,” Verhofstadt told his team, who were both shocked and amused by the story.
Olly Robbins is the prime minister’s Europe advisor based in the Cabinet Office. He took charge of negotiations with the EU mid-way through talks. As an unelected official and former Tory party flunky he took over the talks mid-way from David Davis and has been seen as pursuing the goals of the EU over that of the UK.
Allies of Robbins suggested that the joke could have been taken out of context by the senior EU official, who represents the parliament in Brexit talks. Brexiteer animosity towards Robbins was increased last year after he was overheard in a Brussels bar ruling out no-deal, in contravention of Theresa May’s stated policy. This has of course now become the official UK Government position despite tensions within the cabinet and the Tory party at large.
This explosive documentary has caused ruptures across the Westminster establishment with one shocking scene in which an EU official brands Theresa May’s approach to one aspect of Brexit talks as “insane” and “pathetic”.
