I have previously reported on the halting of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine trial as a result of one of the volunteers experiencing neurological symptoms consistent with a serious spinal inflammatory disorder called Transverse Myelitis
I then reported on the pausing of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine trial due to an unexplained illness.
This was followed the very next day with the pausing of the Eli Lilly trial of its monoclonal antibody treatment due to a potential safety concern.
It has now been reported that we have our first Covid-19 Vaccine volunteer death.
BRAZIL’S health authority has confirmed a volunteer has died after participating in the clinical trials of the coronavirus vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University.
The country’s health authority, Anvisa confirmed one person has died following the trials of the drug. An investigation will be led into the matter.
Despite the death of the volunteer, Oxford University has stated there are no concerns surrounding the safety of the trials.
According to an anonymous person familiar with the matter the participant who died hadn’t received the company’s vaccine. The person asked not to be identified because the information isn’t public.
AstraZeneca said it can’t comment on individual cases because of confidentiality and clinical trial rules.
The vaccine is seen as one of the leading drugs, with the UK Government signing a deal for 100 million doses.
The UK’s chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance, warned it is unlikely a drug will be available until next spring.
Speaking to the Commons and Lords National Security Strategy Committee, he stated the virus will not be completely eradicated. He said: “It is unlikely we will end up with a truly sterilising vaccine.”
Previously, officials had claimed the drug produced by AstraZeneca could be available by the turn of the year.
Head of the UK’s Vaccine Taskforce, Kate Bingham, claimed she was optimistic over the chances of a vaccine being developed by the UK’s candidates. She said 4 of our 6 vaccines are now in phase three studies, and in each of them we’ve seen very positive data in the phase one and two clinical studies, which shows that people who have received the vaccine do elicit a strong immune response, and that, and if you take the neutralising antibodies that are triggered those antibodies are able to kill live Covid virus.
We now need to see whether or not those immune responses that we see translate into protection.”
“So that is very positive and it’s as good as it can be at the moment.”
My Thoughts
So we see our first death with an anonymous source stating the person hadn’t taken the vaccine all very mystifying.
Will the investigation be followed up on by mainstream media? I will be watching this emerging story very closely.
Researchers have yet to produce a safe and effective vaccine against any coronavirus.
And in the words of William Schaffner, a Professor of Preventive Medicine and Infectious Diseases at Vanderbilt University Medical Centre who previously stated “such side effects are noteworthy, but it doesn’t stop the train. The goal of studies is to establish a threshold at which something might go wrong”.
I guess that threshold may just been reached – watch this space?
