Greece has now said it will not accept any asylum applications for one month following Turkey’s decision to let migrants pass in their attempts to travel to Europe.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis tweeted that Greece will protect the EU’s outer borders, telling migrants that they will be turned back if they attempted to cross its border.
On the Greek-Turkish land border, Greek army and police patrols used tear gas and stun grenades to thwart attempts by thousands to push into the country overnight.
Europe finds itself at a crossroads and this fast escalating situation has thrown open a series of fissures including creating tension within NATO. Even confirmed liberal Guy Verhofstadt said that the EU made a mistake by ‘handing the keys to the Sultan Erdogan.’
On Greek islands local people are forming militias and their anger with NGO’s and foreign journalists has reached breaking point. They accuse them of not showing the true facts of what is going on in Islands like Lesbos and Chios.
Meanwhile on the mainland authorities in Greece have been forced to use tear gas and water cannons afternoon to push back crowds attempting to cross. Migrants threw rocks and other objects, and one policeman was injured. Greek authorities said they stopped about 10,000 crossing attempts Saturday, and another 5,500 on Sunday. Amidst a growing number of border-crossing attempts, Greece had deployed military forces to fortify its border along with special forces that have been greeted with cheers by locals.
