When the going gets tough

The article was submitted to UNN by Truth Reporter, a huge thank you to the hard work and time put into this.

This piece was going to be purely about the EU and Brexit but UNN is dedicated to not only giving people a balanced view but also to respond to their preferences. I don’t think there is a great deal more I can tell the UNN audience about the EU that they don’t already know or suspect.

I was going to explore and dispel the myth that the EU is a Nazi construct, but this refutation is best read directly in ‘The Great Deception’ by Christopher Booker and Richard North. This book is absolutely essential reading for anyone who mistrusts the EU and all it represents, most pages have explanatory footnotes and references to the sources, Hansard entries and public documents which support the narrative and it covers the entire process of the EU’s conception, genesis and proliferation to a degree of detail which I could never hope to replicate here.

As I write this, John Bercow is preparing to stop the reintroduction of Boris Johnson’s EU withdrawal bill and the Brexit debacle lurches into another agonising week of acrimony and bitterness. After participating in the debate on Sunday’s UNN broadcast I detected the level of anguish and horror at being a unwilling passenger on the Brexit rollercoaster and decided that this piece of work needs to give people an outlet or at least an alternative to feeling helpless and disempowered by a process that has been subverted by some very cynical and selfish people.

John Bercow

At times like these, it is easy to feel that powerful others are in control and that this process will never end. I cannot promise you it will end, certainly the Boris ‘deal’ even if passed as is will only generate more argument and uncertainty.

What I can give you today is a pathway to feeling more empowered, more content and less anxious about the current situation and a way to decouple from the frenzy and put yourself at the centre of your world.

The first thing everybody needs to do is abandon their false gods, many have felt betrayed by Boris Johnson others think Nigel Farage should be made Prime Minister, the fact is that none of these people really care about you. They want your vote or your money or both – this applies to all the power brokers, talking heads and personalities you’ll see in the media. These people are essentially a cabal, they are all dependent upon each other.  These people should be treated like taxis, they are useful for the ride but you don’t pump up the tires or polish the metalwork on a Sunday.

If you want to prove this point to yourself consider when UNN broke the story of Jo Swinson’s links with EU funding and George Soros, any logical person would have assumed that given the story was well evidenced that the mainstream media would be all over it. Of course, they pretended this information didn’t exist.

George Soros

So what do we do? We become self-reliant, self-educated, self-centred even, we recognise the importance of close family relationships, close friends who share our values and understand the situation in the same way as we do. We also accept the fragility of the ‘system’ we see tearing itself to shreds and accept the fact we may have to live outside it, or without it, with all the minor hardships that implies.

Now I am not suggesting that we all go out into the back garden and start digging a bunker but there are certain things we all need to do to start this journey towards self-reliance. Is your dwelling secure? Could you close your doors and live in relative comfort for a week or two without going out? Do you have a decent torch with batteries in it and a simple transistor radio? Do you have a first aid kit and a range of basic medicines?

None of the above measures will cost you more than a few pounds and what could be more comforting than knowing that your home is secure and can support you for a good period and that you can eat. If you have shelter, food and safety you don’t need to be out on the street fighting anybody, let them get on with it – getting stabbed or arrested isn’t going to help.

Now if this all sounds a bit apocalyptic, it really isn’t, it’s just common sense and learning that the one person you can ALWAYS trust is yourself, you just have to make yourself the strongest, most able and well-equipped person you can possibly be.

I can’t claim to have ‘invented’ this attitude, I learnt it. One of the most inspiring parts of that learning process was a book I read which despite being over 60 years old has lessons we can all learn and use in our everyday lives.

Atlas Shrugged was written by Ayn Rand in 1957, it is written to demonstrate her philosophical paradigm which she called ‘objectivism’ which is a system of belief where the self and self interest become the means where society as a whole achieves freedom. Rand’s view was that unless we tirelessly pursue our own desires and best interests we cannot truly be part of a healthy functioning society. When we succeed or triumph in our own best endeavours instead of forever compromising to please others we actually produce more for society overall.

Of course, we must understand this book was written by a Russian immigrant who saw Lenin’s communist revolution as inherently flawed and loved the freedom she found in the US but the central lesson of this book shines through again and again.

Making yourself the best and strongest person you can be is not selfish, it is essential if we are to get through what comes next – happy reading.
