Who do you think you are kidding Mr Tice?

I must admit I laughed out loud when I saw the news that Richard Tice was to take his Reform party bandwagon to Boston and Skegness, this news only further confirmed a view I have come to over the past few years that Westminster politics is now just a lacklustre sideshow distracting the population from the darker and deeper powers that really guide policy. It is impossible to know whether Mr Tice has true conviction in his ideas or is simply driven by grandiosity and self belief. The problem is that it has become the norm for politicians to parrot the mantra of ‘public service’ so relentlessly that anyone who truly did have that objective is a lone true voice in a chorus of grift and fakery.

Recent years have shown that the level of cynicism in the current UK political landscape is so high that it is difficult to have faith in any of these people, so many have been willing to ditch previously held values and standards when it is expedient to do so and to fall in behind lunatic panic measures as we saw during the Covid fiasco. Putting the character analysis to one side I would have loved to be in the room when Mr Tice made the decision to fight Boston and Skegness. I wonder what metrics he considered and how he martialled the data in front of him. I fear the one data point he gave too much credence to is the fact that this ward returned the biggest vote for Brexit in 2016.

Sadly Mr Tice manifestly misunderstands the electorate in this area and he clearly hasn’t done his research on what makes them tick. For those who don’t know, Boston is a market town in Lincolnshire, a county mainly famed for producing a large proportion of the vegetables you buy in supermarkets, potatoes, cabbages, onions… you know, veg. The town is also a working port and has a fair degree of industry. The ethos of the place is simple – people here work for a living. When the large farms couldn’t recruit enough indigenous workers they imported Poles and other Eastern Europeans and they now form around 30% of the population here. The vast majority of these migrant workers are superb people, they share our basic Christian values and know how to put in a day’s work. The type of industrious and hard working people that built the country in the first place. The rump of the rest of the residents here are what you would colloquially call ‘boomers’, they worked in the fields and the factories until they retired and now occupy a myriad of tidy bungalows and pleasant semis with manicured gardens.

Remember Mr Tice 2016 is a while ago now, the electorate then is not the electorate now. In 2016 there was a smouldering resentment in the British born population that the new residents had somehow ruined the character of the town but I disagree with this. The town’s trajectory was already set by the market forces that had incentivised the British workers out of the fields and introduced their Polish replacements.

Mr Tice, if you go to the centre of Boston you will find there a closed down store called ‘REBOS’ this used to be called ‘Oldrids’ and was a proper old fashioned department store in the Grace Bros style. Shut – not by migrant Polish workers but by markets moving online. All you will find there now are homeless men in the doorways begging for change sitting on donated blankets and cardboard. The world of 2016 is now gone Mr Tice, Brexit wasn’t enacted, it was simulated. Spanners were thrown into the works to such an extent that all we got is a dystopic contrivance seemingly designed to accentuate the negatives and eliminate all the positive aspects of leaving the EU.

The only saving grace of this diabolical betrayal is the fact that now no perceptive person has any illusion that their vote has any relevance or value. Brexit was neutered because the establishment would not tolerate it. This final insult has reduced the jingoistic fervour that the Brexiteers once possessed to a dull acceptance of the continued decay of their society into a dysfunctional morass.
The Brexiteer vote of 2016 has dissipated, many of these people are now sadly dead, many more are clinging to life by their fingernails trying to access an increasingly broken health service, struggling to buy food and juggle bills. The sunny uplands of Brexit were denied to them. The huge possibilities of a state unshackled from the giant bureaucracy of the EU and exposed to the potentials of global trade were all wasted.

Sadly Mr Tice, the people who you think are going to vote for you are tired, old and disillusioned, they have been fed promises and rhetoric for nearly a decade and have received nothing for their loyalty but lies and disappointment. Your expensive bouffon haircut and £200 shoes will not impress them. These people want only one thing, a little comfort in their twilight years, they will vote for the Tories because they have been given promises and assurances from people like you before and been left with nothing.

However moribund and calamitous the current Tories may be, they will vote for them because they are an established brand and there is no other choice. These people know full well they are being lied to but the psychological process of accepting the lies and being cosseted by them is a little easier when they come from the Conservatives.

As for the new residents, they despise you with a real vengeance and as I have stated most of them are exemplary people but there are a minority who are not and you don’t want to annoy them.
There was a time when I thought UKIP and its various incarnations and descendants offered a solution, it has been a stark lesson to understand that Politics is a façade over a system far bigger than any one man or political party.

So Mr Tice, I am afraid you’ve made a huge error. I could go on and discuss your illiberal stance during Covid on vaccine mandates and your support for the
illegitimate and criminal regime in Kiev but while these are important pieces of evidence on your character they do not alter the demographic problem you face in
your chosen constituency.

So may the best man win (it will be Matt Warman by a very slim majority).
