So, we are back in ‘will he, won’t he?’, ‘push me, pull me’ territory. ‘He’ is our hapless hunk of a Prime Minister who, I guess and sincerely hope, does not want to lock us down over Christmas. That’s what he says but he almost certainly will. At least, he will try to, except it will be called ‘Plan B’. He is like a pontoon player deciding whether accepting another card from the dealer will lead to pontoon or will take him to bust. Boris is playing a game where our political masters think they hold all the cards; the problem is that the stakes are the lives and freedoms of the British population. We have been here before over the lifting of restrictions in the run up to the, so-called, ‘Freedom Day’ earlier this year. Keep the population guessing, swing the sword of Damocles over them and they’ll get in line.
As his ‘health’ henchman Sajid Javid says take the vaccine booster (or else) and maybe things will work out fine. If Javid ever seemed like a decent chap to anyone then they were entirely wrong. He has gone from his initial wolf in sheep’s clothing approach to presenting information related to Covid-19 to simply being a wolf in wolf’s clothing. He displays all the arrogance and disregard that accompanies power towards the people he purports to serve. Especially those who use the NHS. Someone, perfectly willing to take his booster jab, questioned why it was not from the same manufacturer only to be told by Javid to ‘show some respect for the NHS’. A non sequitur if ever there was one, and that was to someone willing to have his third jab. Imagine what Javid’s attitude is to people who are unwilling, for perfectly legitimate reasons, not to take any Covid jabs at all. As Patrick O’Flynn said ‘the NHS does not deserve our blind respect’ and, frankly, neither does Sajid Javid.
The Prime Minister’s reluctance to go to Plan B undoubtedly stems from the ensuing lack of popularity he will suffer if he does try to lock us down again. Whatever the Ipsos Morons or YouGov say about what the British population want, I find it hard to believe—with the possible exception of Waitrose shoppers—that the majority of the population will be happy to return to restrictions of movement and assembly. Of course, I could be wrong and always reserve that right.
I also assume that Boris is watching major European cities crashing and burning as people protest and riot against Covid related restrictions leading to live firing on protesters in The Netherlands. I doubt our police force would open fire on us. I know armed officers and they are the most reluctant people in the country to fire their weapons. The police are also increasingly reluctant even to arrest people breaking Covid restrictions, something that does not seem to reach the pages of the mainstream media very often and disappears from Google very quickly. If the British people take to the streets again, I think they will stay there until the government backs down. If I am wrong, then God help us.
