Images are emerging of a huge pool party at a water park in Wuhan, which was the epicentre of the COVID-19 outbreak. Hundreds, if not thousands of people can be seen packed into the water park with no semblance of social distancing.
The photographs were taken over the weekend at Wuhan Maya Beach Water Park and appear to show the virus, which originated in the city as a distant or non-existent memory. The party-goers present appears to be watching a capacity DJ performance.
These scenes are drastically different from the strict lockdown that was imposed on the central Hubei province city on January 23 which stopped the movement of Wuhan’s 11 million residents. This lockdown included all public transport, including buses, railways, flights, and ferry services being suspended as well as movement outside people’s homes being restricted.
This lockdown was lifted on the 8th of April 8 by which point the virus was understood to be at its peak in the UK. The official government figures say that 3,000 died in Wuhan from the virus. However, those living there reportedly believe about 42,000 people died. Those who doubt the official government numbers cite the number of cremation urns being delivered to funeral homes.
This has caused considerable outrage on social media. One user on Twitter @PatriotWarriorX tweeted “ They gave us this plague and now they are celebrating. Great”.
