Tasnim Akunjee is the high profile Lawyer who has been the public face for a number of terrorists and other radical jihadis over the years. Most recently he cam to prominence in representing the Syrian Boy Jamal in his ongoing case against Tommy Robinson. He has also hit the headlines for supporting Shamima Begum and slamming the UK Government over her treatment.
Akunjee has now provoked fury with the tweet below that according to his location settings was made from Iraq:
As you can see as well the Tweet was accompanied by a barrage of comments, in what is termed as being Twitter ratioed, condemning Akunjee for his statement. It appears he was trying to allude to his client Shamima Begum being ‘groomed’ to join ISIS with this analogy.
Prominent anti-extremist Majid Nawaz has frequently criticised Akunjee for his associations with terrorists while there are many rumours on social media regarding his legal practice, work and comments he has made over the years.
Akunjee today told The Metro that he has received numerous death threats in relation to his work.
The Metro said:
‘I don’t care what people are saying, doing the right thing is important’. Mr Akunjee was also critical of what he called ‘smear campaigns’ to link him to extremism, saying the vitriol directed at him was simply because he was a Muslim lawyer. He said: ‘If I was a white guy called Smith, this wouldn’t happen, it’s because of my religious orientation’.
Mr Akunjee was also critical of what he called ‘smear campaigns’ to link him to extremism ‘If I’m being portrayed as an extremist because of who my clients are, then all lawyers are potentially extremists, because we all share a link with our clients.’
