Prince William has travelled to New Zealand on behalf of the Queen after a direct request from Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand’s prime minister. The two day tour started with a service for Anzac Day, which commemorates the military veterans of Australia and New Zealand.
Ms Ardern indicated that the future King’s visit would “bring comfort” as William had a “close connection” with New Zealand and also Christchurch.
Ardern said: “His visit provides the opportunity to pay tribute to those affected by the mosque terrorist attacks and show support to the local and national community.”
William gave prayers for the entire Christchurch community where he said that the Mosque Terror Attack was a “cruel nightmare”. Kensington Palace said Prince William would “pay tribute to the extraordinary compassion and solidarity” shown by the people of New Zealand after the attack that left 49 worshippers dead.
