It is now approaching 12 years since Madeleine McCann went missing whilst on holiday in Praia de Luz, Portugal. The case took an unprecedented turn this week after her mother Kate was accused of being a secret MI5 agent when her eldest daughter went missing.
Jose Antonio Saraiva is an established journalist and founder of Portuguese newspaper Sol. He alleged that he was told the sudden disappearance was directly linked to her parents’ “secret activity” owing to her mother’s “suspected” membership in MI5.
In the latest issue of Sol, Saraiva asked why Gordon Brown, UK’s Chancellor at the time, decided to send British Ambassador John Buck to Praia da Luz immediately after news broke that the youngster had vanished from the holiday resort.
Saraiva wrote:
“This would explain the immediate dispatch to Portugal of a representative of the Chancellor of the Exchequer and future Prime Minister Gordon Brown. It was said that Brown did it because he was Gerry’s schoolmate. But this explanation doesn’t wash. The English are very formal and there’s not the cronyism there that characterizes Southern Europe. A minister doesn’t send an official representative to find out about the disappearance of a little girl because he went to school with her father.”
The McCann family have faced a series of accusations similar to this over the years and according to reports they are deeply hurt by this latest theory.
A spokesperson for the family totally refuted the allegations saying:
“These are absolutely absurd and ridiculous allegations, which Madeleine’s parents are certain no one in their right mind would even consider believing. It is unmitigated garble and yet more nonsense they are having to endure at a very painful and difficult time for them.”
The Metropolitan Police into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann has so far cost in the region of £12 million and it is said they will require more funds to continue but all leads appear to have been exhausted with only a handful of detectives working on the story that once had up to 31 detectives on the case.
