Nigel Farage, the fearless Brexit hero has launched a savage attack on EU Chief negotiator Michel Barnier. Farage has said: “Barnier is trying to break up the United Kingdom. He’s not carrying out these negotiations in good faith and it’s time for Mrs May to stand up to him.”
Michel Bernard Barnier is serving as European Chief Negotiator during the Brexit negotiations.
Barnier has enraged Nigel Farage who has accused the European Union’s negotiator of trying to “break up the United Kingdom” by tearing apart Theresa May’s backstop proposal.
Barnier didn’t completely rule out the UK’s proposal but warned Westminster would likely have to make significant compromises for its backstop to become workable.
Barnier also rejected the idea of the EU’s own backstop, which would keep Northern Ireland attached to the bloc’s customs union effectively creating a border in the Irish sea, which could not become UK-wide.
Barnier said: “Let me be clear, our backstop cannot be extended to the whole of the United Kingdom. It has been designed for the specific situation of Northern Ireland, the temporary backstop is not in line with what want.”
Britain agreed that in the absence of any other solution, Northern Ireland would remain in “full alignment” with the EU’s single market and customs union but the deal was pulled at the 11th-hour after DUP resistance.
Many say it is encouraging that the DUP are willing to put their foot down when it comes to the Union of the United Kindom of Great Britain and Northen Ireland Because the Tories in power seem more than willing to sell them out when it comes to Brexit negotiations.
