The long awaited ‘White Paper’ written by the Government has confirmed a post- Brexit Britain will retain Free Movement of some EU citizens. The publication says the government is prepared to allow EU citizens to travel freely without a visa in the UK for tourism and temporary work and allow EU students to study in the UK.
The document says it is required to acknowledge the “depth of the relationship and close ties between the peoples of the UK and the EU”.
Supporters of a full and clean Brexit have voiced concern that despite the headline commitment to end free movement, EU citizens would still have preferential access to the UK compared with other countries, although Whitehall sources have indicated that it would be theoretically possible for other countries to strike similar deals in the future.
The document said that on movement for workers after Brexit: “the UK’s future economic partnership should therefore provide reciprocal arrangements, consistent with the ending of free movement including measuers that support businesses to provide services and to move their talented people”.
Boris Johnson said emphatically in his resignation letter that he believed that the UK would be “headed for a status of a colony” because the country was continuing to share all of the EU’s rules yet have absolutely no say in the matter.
David Clews of UK Unity says: “The form of Brexit being proposed is actually WORSE than us continuing to stay in the EU. As part of the EU we at least had some say in how we were governed now we will not even have that! Is May trying to appease remainers or is there something even more sinister afoot such as selling us out even further to Europe? There is only one answer and that is a Full and Clean Brexit from the EU and all of institutions! Also walk away to WTO trade rules and pay them NOTHING!
