US President Donald Trump has invited Russian leader Vladimir Putin to visit the US in the autumn, his press secretary has said.
Sarah Sanders tweeted that discussions for the visit were already underway. Earlier Mr Trump rejected a proposal by Vladimir Putin to allow Russia to question US citizens.
The two leaders held a summit in Finland on Monday, few details of what they actually discussed have emerged. There has been no word yet on the meeting from President Donald J. Trump or President Vladimir Putin.
On Thursday, Mr Trump said the talks had been a “great success” the U.S President also said that he was looking forward to their next meeting.
US Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer called for Mr Trump to reveal what he had discussed with Mr Putin saying: “Until we know what happened at that two-hour meeting in Helsinki, the president should have no more one-on-one interactions with Putin,” he said. “In the United States, in Russia, or anywhere else.”
Michael McFaul is a leading ‘expert’ on Russia, American foreign policy, and democratic development around the world.
A former U.S. ambassador to Russia, McFaul is currently a professor of political science at Stanford University.
Mr McFaul said: “When Trump says Russia is no longer targeting America, that’s not how this American feels.Putin is most certainly targeting and intimidating me. And I’m an American.”
It looks as though President Trump is doing a good job of strengthening U.S-Russian relations and finding common ground were both countries can work together for a safer and more secure world.
