Embattled Mayor of London is feeling the pressure after it was revealed that he spent £200,000 on a beach party! His small business organisation LEAP paid for the beach and party in East London.
The pop-up beach party in the Royal Docks featured a swimming pool, street food stalls and classic film screenings.Bliss Events, which was paid to organise the bash, boasted that the venue was “London’s largest urban beach”.
According to a promotional movie for the event it was: “Funded by the Greater London Assembly and the London Borough of Newham, Bliss partnered with Star Events to plan a set of structures, linked by walkways, and create the first pool proper on the London leg of the Thames.”
Khan has been slammed for spending taxpayers’ money on the event while complaining about shortfalls in the crime-fighting budget.
Susan Hall of the Tories said:
The Mayor constantly moans that government cuts mean that he can’t put more bobbies on the beat or fill the gaping black hole in the transport budget.
Yet he has miraculously managed to find hundreds of thousands to spend on an extravagant beach party.The party was held at the Royal Docks and featured a swimming pool and outdoor cinema screens
He should be slashing wasteful spending and using the savings to tackle London’s crime epidemic.
The whole point of the LEAP is to help small business and boost jobs. Londoners will seriously question whether this complete waste of money is the best way to achieve this.”
John O’Connell of the Taxpayers’ Alliance thundered: “The idea that splashing £200,000 of taxpayers’ cash on a beach party is part of an effort to boost economic development is a complete farce.”
A spokesperson for the Mayor of London said: “Dock Beach is part of the wider regeneration of the Royal Docks – which has the potential to deliver up to 35,000 jobs and 4,000 new homes – and attracting people to the area benefits small businesses and boosts the local economy.”
