Britain voted to leave the European Union over 3 years ago today and Article 50 was triggered over 2 years ago. However, British politics appears to be in somewhat of a paralysis. Article 50 is the mechanism by which Britain is attempting to leave the European Union, however by the admission of its author it was designed “NEVER to be used”. Giuliano Amato, a former Italian Prime Minister crafted article 50 as part of the Lisbon treaty in 2009. In the immediate aftermath of the referendum, at a conference in Rome Mr Amato argued that if Britain was to “lose” when it comes to finances then Britain may reconsidering leaving the European Union.
Mr Amato stated “I wrote Article 50, so I know it well. My intention was that it should be a classic safety valve that was there but never used. It is like having a fire extinguisher that should never have to be used. Instead, the fire happened.” Fire extinguishers are excellent tools at putting out a fire temporarily however if there is a gas leak the fire is highly likely to return at a later date. Mr Amato also spoke of a need to show Britain the error of its ways and said the EU had to be “especially tough” in the Brexit talks, to prevent others attempting to leave the EU.

Mr Amato’s comments barely received any coverage by the old when they were made in the aftermath of the referendum. In spite of this, Mr Amato’s comments seem to have been highly accurate and provide a fascinating context to which the current Brexit impasse can be understood. The European Union is often criticised for being over-complicated and futile functions. This is perfectly symbolised by a “classic safety valve” that was “never to be used”. No independent nation has ever left the European Union despite 3 countries previously voting to leave. It is unlikely anyone can state confidently and categorically that Britain will be out of the EU by the end of the month.
The next few months are set to see a TITANIC BATTLE to get Brexit over the line. Can you trust the BBC or people like Kay Burley & Sky to report accurately?
