Speculation John Bercow could become the Prime Minister to prevent no-deal Brexit

There are rumours swirling around Westminster that outgoing speaker in the House of Commons  John Bercow could be handed the powers to do the supposed job of the Prime Minister and send the letter, required as part of the so-called ‘Benn bill’ , asking the EU to extend the Brexit deadline if Boris Johnson refuses, as reports are suggesting that he may well do.

Reports are emerging that Remainer MPs are plotting to introduce a new law which would enable Mr Bercow to bypass the Prime Minister and go straight to Brussels on behalf of the House of Commons to prevent a no-deal Brexit. In an outlandish move, these politicians suggest Parliament should sit on Saturday, October 19, to pass the Bill. A senior Commons source said: “The rebels say that, if Boris wants to play with nuclear weapons, then so will they”. In addition to this, on Sky News, the former Justice Secretary David Gauke, who has had the Conservative whip removed by Boris Johnson, refused to comment on any new Act which could see the Speaker’s powers increased.

Mr Gauke further fuelled speculation when he said “I don’t want to get drawn into specific ideas but what I would say is that the Benn Act is effective, it does what it intends to do and it should be abided by, and I very much hope that the Government will be clear that they will abide by the law. There are lots of suggestions of loopholes and so on. As far as I can see, anything that’s been suggested so far can be easily dealt with and, if necessary, the courts will ensure that the will of Parliament and the law is complied with.”

Ugly scenes have been witnessed in the Commons in recent weeks and many such as Nick Ferrari and Jacob Rees-Mogg slamming the conduct of Mr Bercow. Mr Bercow has been the speaker in the Commons for over 10 years and received £77,208 as the speaker on top of his salary as MP for Buckingham, which takes his total salary to just shy of a staggering £155,000 a year. Some may suggest Mr Bercow’s stance against prorogation was as a result of him revelling in his job, a little more than most of the British citizens of the UK!
