Bill Gates is urging rich nations to move to “100% synthetic beef”

It is being reported that Bill Gates is urging rich nations to move to “100% synthetic beef” as a means of addressing the greenhouse gas emissions that are behind global climate change. The billionaire philanthropist has released a new book named ‘How to Avoid a Climate Disaster’ and in it he argues that it is still possible for humanity to avert the disaster of climate change through technological achievements but does predict that direct government policy will ultimately be needed.

Mr Gates has said: “I don’t think the poorest 80 countries will be eating synthetic beef. I do think all rich countries should move to 100% synthetic beef”. He has argued that cows that are bred for beef are a massive contributor to emissions. Mr Gates has spoken of livestock and has described the problem of livestock as “very difficult” and stated that, in his opinion, compounds which reduce methane emission would not be enough.

He has said on the topic of synthetic beef: “You can get used to the taste difference, and the claim is they’re going to make it taste even better over time”. He then went on to cite specific companies such as Impossible and Beyond and has sad that they “have a road map, a quality road map and a cost road map, that makes them totally competitive”. Mr Gates said that the companies involved in synthetic meat currently represent less than 1% of the world’s meat supply but stated with confidence that “they’re on their way”.
