The United Kingdom’s Border Force Agency has intercepted 115 suspected illegal migrants crossing the Channel by boat on Monday, the Home Office confirmed.
Seven boats were intercepted by Border Force agents on what has been the busiest day for crossings so far in 2021, according to data from the PA news agency.
Monday’s arrivals surpass the previous high for the year, set on January 9th 2021, when 103 people crossed the Dover Strait.
Last month, 308 people were intercepted in 18 incidents, surpassing January’s figures of 223 in 15 incidents.
Official figures state in 2020 a record 8,410 arrived via the illegal crossing, far surpassing 2019’s total of 1,850.
Those on board the boats were taken to the Dover Marina in Kent for processing.
A Home Office spokesperson previously said in regard to the unlawful crossings: “People should claim asylum in the first safe country they reach and not risk their lives making these dangerous crossings. We are continuing to pursue the criminals behind these illegal crossings.
“The government is also returning illegal migrants who have no right to stay in the UK to safe countries.
“In January, new rules were introduced which make asylum claims inadmissible where people have travelled through safe countries to get to the UK through illegal routes.”
