Alastair Campbell, controversial former communications director for Labour prime minister Tony Blair and an ardent remain has just confirmed that he has been expelled from The Labour Party for voting for a different party which is against Labour Party rules. He is regularly on the TV screens campaigning against Brexit as a member of The Peoples Vote campaign.
Campbell’s expulsion comes after he said he voted for the Liberal Democrats in the European elections last week. He has admitted that he suffers from bouts of severe depression with many questioning his current mental state. He is an outspoken critic of the direction the Labour Party has taken under Jeremy Corbyn.
Campbell has tweeted out that “sad and disappointed” by his expulsion “particularly on a day leadership finally seems to be moving to the right place on Brexit”.
He said:
“I am and always will be Labour. I voted Lib Dem, without advance publicity, to try to persuade Labour to do right thing for country/party. In light of appeal, I won’t be doing media on this. But hard not to point out difference in the way antisemitism cases have been handled.”
He has confirmed that he is taking legal advice and will be appealing against the decision. Campbell was the famous architect of ‘The Dodgy Dossier’ upon which the Iraq War was predicated. The war went on to see hundreds of British Lives lost and around 1 million Iraqis as well as the ‘suicide’ of Dr David Kelly.
