Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, Jeremy Corbyn, Diane Abbott, David Lammy and many others across the political spectrum have described Notting Hill as all that is good about about a multi-cultural and diverse London….

On day one Forty-two people were detained for drug offences, twenty on suspicion of possessing offensive weapons and seven on public order charges with the total number of arrests on the day numbering 136. Over the years it has seen numerous shootings and stabbings.

The Met Police task force also revealed today they had seized three knives using stop and search tactics, deployed under Section 60 throughout the Carnival weekend. A Section 60 Order for the Notting Hill Carnival weekend was issued in a bid to crackdown against violence and to ensure everyone can “enjoy a safe and spectacular event”.

More than 13,000 police officers were deployed to the streets – the highest number in six years – as more than two million festival-goers attended the first day of the two-day celebration.

Notting Hill Carnival Gold Commander Dave Musker, said: “As the Gold Commander responsible for the policing of this event, my job is to ensure everyone participating and attending can enjoy a safe and spectacular event.

The MPS has worked tirelessly to develop an appropriate and proportionate policing plan; however, given the intelligence picture and incidents of violence I have seen across the city over the last week, I have made the decision to authorise this order as an additional preventative measure.

The use of this authority will reassure our communities that we are constantly working to protect them. It will also send a message to those intent on committing acts of violence that we will robustly target them.

The organisers have installed knife arches along several “strategic points” across streets in Kensington and Chelsea, to stop those who possessed weapons, but officials have not disclosed their locations.

Today is ‘family day’ which means nearly 7,000 officers from the Met Police’s newly formed Violent Crime Task Force will be deployed on Monday to “combat the threat of violent crime” which is up from 6100 last year.

A Spokesperson for the Met said: “The sheer number of people coming to Carnival and the relatively small geographical area, means that it is a challenging environment to police.

We are working closely with the event organisers to ensure that the event is a safe environment where people can come and enjoy themselves. Whilst there’s no specific threat to this event, we are keeping the situation under constant review.”

Commander Musker said in addition: “The Met seeks to support Notting Hill Carnival Ltd, Carnivalists and local communities to deliver a safe and spectacular event this Bank Holiday weekend. Our continued major effort directed against violence across the Capital continues.”
