Social media has been ablaze this week after pictures emerged of Halal slaughter taking place outside of a house in Dagenham. The animal rights charity the RSPCA has been widely lobbied wanting them to act on the issue. Some on social media have withdrawn donations with even more threatening to do so. This image is only the tip of the iceberg around wider concerns about ‘religious slaughter’ and it’s place within the UK.

One prolific activist Meadow has had a tweet retweeted hundreds of times which had the link to our Ricky Gervais article and they have been forced to respond due to the amount of pressure received.

As you will see the above images are sickening and Dagenham resident Julia McClenaghan, whose flat looks onto the yard in which animal carcasses were seen being butchered, said: “It seems one of the least hygienic places to prepare meat, and they were using an old rag to wipe their tools.”

As you can see the above tweet by Meadow has been widely retweeted and continues to be so. The article itself has also been shared across Facebook and Twitter nearly 30,000 times showing the anger of most people at the barbaric treatment of animals in what amounts to a direct attack on our culture and way of life.

The also replied suggesting the best way for people to get non-stunned slaughter banned is by lobbying MP’s and politicians and they also said:

Many on social media have asked why the RSPCA campaigned so vigourously against fox hunting yet have remained so silent on Kosher and Halal slaughter. It has been argued that they are afraid of the ramifications of raising their head above the parapet on this issue. Many people are angry that they can be so passionate about stopping cruelty to animals yet near silence on this issue. The same goes for PETA who are known for their passionate campaigns against fur and hunting but again near silence on this.

Dagenham Council are apparently investigating the issue of the outdoor slaughter but when the family were approached for comment by The Sun newspaper they initially did not think they had done anything wrong.

Ricky Gervais has slammed the religious slaughtering of animals in civilised countries. Mr Gervais posted to his over 4million facebook followers saying: “There is no excuse for animal cruelty. I didn’t care if it’s your ‘culture’. I don’t care if it’s ‘tradition’. And I couldn’t give a fuck what your ‘god’ says either.”

Though not fully apparent Mr Gervais comments seemed to take aim at the religious slaughtering on British streets.

The Muslim community has recently celebrated the festival of Eid and at the end, it is customary to slaughter an animal in the traditional style that is to slit its throat and leave it to bleed to death.

Photos have been doing rounds on social media of the horrific slaughtering taking place, one photo shows animals lying dead outside a British Council flat.

Mr Gervais shared with his facebook status a photo of him holding a sign that read: ” Why is “religious” slaughter allowed in civilised countries? Animals are real. They have rights. Unlike mental f**king Mumbo Jumbo.

Ricky was met with people taking issue with his post like Megan Christine who said:

“This is a hugely ignorant post. And causes divides across religion and culture. I’m not ignorant to the fact that the poster is directed at Non-stun slaughter… though it is not mentioned it talks only of religious slaughter which covers both stun and non-stun. When religious slaughter is stunned it the most humane and respectful slaughter on which the animal is blessed for the offering of its life… something of which is not acknowledged in conventional western slaughterhouses. I have also travelled most of Asia and have seen religious slaughter (albeit on a small village scale) of which the animal is not stunned.. but feels very little pain andIi noted no distress,
where a goat was handled gently and it’s throat slit whilst being held and stroke… the process took seconds and a great deal of prayers were said and attention given to the animal as thanks for its offering and the village was fed with zero waste and plenty of gratitude.

I do not agree with large-scale non-stun slaughter… and this post should direct it’s slaughter upset to that form alone.. by using the blanket term religious slaughter is offensive and misleading to a large group of well trained and respectful religious slaughtermen.

A bit like taking all farmers as heartless animal killers. Respect all people, culture and faith.”

However, Ruby Florence replied to Megan Christine comment saying: “No animal “offers their life” – they aren’t committing suicide for the sake of a different species’ pleasure. It is taken from them. There is no such thing as “respectful slaughter” of an animal who does not want to die in order to become someone’s dinner.”
