THE investigation organisation ‘VoteWatch’ is claiming to have uncovered significant electoral fraud in Slough. It is reporting that a member of staff working for the borough council was placed under suspicion and this is not the first instance. The unnamed member of staff is not have thought to have been sacked or dismissed and is currently denying any involvement. VoteWatch is claiming that “one source close to the council saying that the individual is expected to be dismissed over the coming days”. 

This story needs to be understood in the context that two members of the council have previously been arrested and convicted for their involvement in a serious case of postal vote fraud. The previous staff members Zakhria Dar and Natalia Glowacka had volunteered to be canvassers and to knock on the doors of people who had not filled in electoral registration forms. They went out into the local community to get residents to complete the vital information for the council which would allow them to vote.

Instead of filling out the forms with the correct information the pair, who are reportedly both Labour party supporters, filled them in with incorrect data and forged signatures.

The borough of Slough was highlighted by Sir Eric Pickles’ review of electoral fraud as one of 18 locations that are most at threat of electoral fraud. As part of this review Sir Eric called for voter ID as a means of combatting this potential fraud. Slough Council has released a statement which said: “The forms were submitted to the electoral team who realised very quickly something was wrong during a routine sample check where the information did not match that already on the council system. A series of similar looking signatures were also discovered. As a result, more checks were conducted and it was discovered a large number of forms contained false information which had been completed by the employees who had been trusted with the job, rather than the named householder”.

‘VoteWatch’ does not consider this matter closed and is claiming that it will be visiting the area in the new year to undertake a full investigation.
