The controversial Anthony Fauci has said that people may decide that face mask-wearing becomes seasonal after the coronavirus pandemic has ended as a means of helping to avoid spreading respiratory illnesses like the flu.
In an interview on NBC, the chief medical adviser to the White House has now said that there is quantifiable data that shows the use of masks has stopped the spread of other viruses. Dr Fauci has said: “We’ve had practically a non-existent flu season this year merely because people were doing the kinds of public health things that were directed predominantly against covid-19”. In addition to this, Fauci conceded that it is “conceivable” that during seasonal periods where respiratory-borne viruses such as the flu are prevalent, people might decide to wear masks.
Dr Fauci’s remarks come only two weeks after federal health officials said that fully vaccinated people can go without masks outdoors when walking, jogging, biking or dining at outdoor restaurants. The US’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention continue to recommend masking wearing in crowded outdoor settings and venues such as stadiums and concerts where unvaccinated people are.
