Statements are emerging from the French foreign minister Jean-Yves Le Drian that describe the current Brexit situation as “very worrying” and an extension to article 50 will not happen under the current circumstances. These comments are likely to alarm those who believe in Britain remaining in the EU, following MP’s decision to pass a bill tying the government’s hand in blocking a no-deal exit. It will on the other hand delight those who wish to pursue a full and clean WTO Brexit.
Shortly before the previous extension, Britain was instructed to use the time wisely. However, taking aside the change of Prime minister little movement has been made since that point. Mr Drian left little accusation of sitting on the fence when he also said, “We are not going to do (extend) this every three months”. It is becoming increasingly clear that Britain is unlikely to get an extension without the promise of a second referendum or a general election to break the current impasse. This is on top of Boris Johnson’s insistence that he will not allow further delay to Brexit.
These developments come against a poll in the Sunday newspapers that claim Mr Johnson and the Conservative party now have a 14-point lead over Labour. In the poll released by YouGov the Conservative Party is polling at 35 per cent with Labour lagging on 21 per cent, the Lib Dems on 19 per cent and the Brexit Party on 12 per cent.
Some have suggested that these comments could force a change in position for the opposition in Westminster as if the European Union do not grant an extension it is likely that Britain would by default ‘crash out’. Given the EU’s previous record in these negotiations of not amending their position, these comments could by their very nature have an effect on the current impasse. As a result of the EU’s constitution, all the member states must vote for an extension, which further muddies the waters around any potential extension.
