It has emerged that a worker at Great Ormond Street Hospital worker had claimed that she was bullied for being a Christian and branded a ‘stupid northerner’ and a ‘silly white b***h’. However, this claim has been dismissed by an employment tribunal.
Catherine Maughan had sued Great Ormond Street, claiming she had been discriminated against in terms of her sex, her race and her religion. Miss Maughan is 36 and is from North Yorkshire. She had made allegations that staff told her not to drink alcohol after work as it would offend Muslims as well as allegations that she was subjected to racist comments and threatening behaviour.
Maughan gave a witness statement to the employment tribunal when she said she was told to ‘accept that in black African culture, men are dominating towards women’, and that she felt ‘extremely anxious, stressed and worried for her safety’. Miss Maughan has claimed that she was so stressed her hair fell out.
The employment tribunal has dismissed her allegations of bullying and ruled that she was neither a victim of racial nor sexual discrimination. The judgment read: ‘The unanimous judgment of the Tribunal is that: The complaints of direct race discrimination are not well-founded. The complaints of direct sex discrimination are not well-founded. The complaint of victimisation is not well-founded. The complaint of unauthorised deduction of wages is well-founded’.
A Great Ormond Street Hospital spokesman has said: ‘A Judgment has been issued in the Employment Tribunal claim between Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust and Ms Maughan. All discrimination and victimisation claims were judged to be unfounded and have been dismissed. The only claim upheld was a minor technical claim related to wages’.
