PRINCE Harry stated that the travel industry as a sector needs to create a more “sustainable” model to protect the environment as the world rebuilds from the Coronavirus pandemic. The Duke of Sussex has recognised that “not to travel again is not an option” but has urged industry leaders to “reset and reimagine” its future.
Prince Harry has written in a foreword to the annual report of Travalyst, which was an initiative launched by the Duke of Sussex in 2019: “Right before us, there is an opportunity to do things differently, to do things better. Travel and tourism are no exception. As the industry re-emerges from crisis, there is an urgent need to reset and reimagine. This global health crisis continues to hold many in its grip, forcing communities and nations into one of the most difficult times in modern history.
He went on to say: “Those working in and relying on travel and tourism have experienced acute hardship. If anyone needed reminding, this has shown us just how vital the industry is to families and communities around the world. Together, we have a responsibility — and opportunity — to rebuild for a more sustainable and equitable future; one our world needs, our children deserve, and where generations not-yet-born can continue to explore and enjoy the beauty and benefit of this home we share”.
Prince Harry and his wife Meghan are keen environmental campaigners but have been criticised in the past for their frequent use of private jets. In 2019, Sir Elton John flew Harry and Meghan to his home in Nice. Sir Elton John stated that this was done to “maintain a high level of much-needed protection”.
