GUY Verhofstadt has invoked a Twitter storm and has received a significant backlash after taking a swipe at Boris Johnson’s chief adviser Dominic Cummings over his alleged lockdown breach. One Twitter user replied, “What has any of this to do with you?”.
Mr Verhofstadt was the European Parliament’s Brexit representative and has been a persistent critic of Brexit and of the Prime Minister himself. Mr Verhofstadt took to Twitter to reference a cartoon from the Sunday Times, which shows the PM saying “I can’t sack Dominic Cummings until he tells me to”. Mr Verhofstadt captioned it with the comment: “Following the Cummings saga in the UK, this is spot on..” He followed his tweet with another which said: “Clear now there is one rule for populists like Trump, Bolsanaro, Kaczynski, Johnson and Cummings & another for the people they claim to represent. By putting themselves above the law they set for others, they become the elites they tell us they rage against on our behalf!”.
His Tweet prompted almost 2,500 comments, with many of the commenters appearing confused as to why Mr Verhofstadt was continuing to focus his attention on the UK. One Twitter user said “Omg, you’re obsessed with us”, another called him a hypocrite.
The prominent financial analyst and Brexiteer David Buik replied saying: “Please stay out of our business, Mr Verhofstadt – these domestic issues are not part your European brief!” However, one Twitter user replied “No let him David…Guy has been amazing for Brexit! We wouldn’t have achieved it without him…”.
