This political week is set to be a key one as the British government will seek approval from parliament for a 6-month extension to the Coronavirus Act. In addition to this, plenty of other legislation will be put to parliament before the Easter recess which will commence from next week.
For almost a year the government have been using the emergency powers from the Coronavirus Act to pass legislation with the aim of stopping the spread of COVID-19. As a result of this Act the law-making process of passing new restrictions is curtailed which in turn means less scrutiny in Parliament and poor laws being passed.
A number of Tory MP’s look set to vote against the Coronavirus Act being extended this week. One of those is Esther Mcvey. She has said that the events at the vigil for Sarah Everard have been the final straw for her. She has said: The ensuing situation can only be described as a mess, disrespectful to our longstanding rights and deeply insensitive to the death of Sarah Everard. But the fact MPs pointed at the police was plain wrong. There are few things less edifying than MPs jumping on to a bandwagon to blame the police for enforcing the very laws that they had voted to introduce”.
UNN’s Oliver Down understands that Thursday will be the day that MP’s get to vote on the extension of the Coronavirus Act. This extension, if approved, would go way past the stated date by the government that freedom will return from June the 21st. UNN’s Oliver Down expects the government to get their wish in extending the lockdown powers. All eyes will be on how many Conservative MP’s stand up for freedom.
