Images of the Leader of the House of Commons Jacob Rees-Mogg have gone viral across social media. Many remain activists have criticised Mr Rees-Mogg, the MP for Bath and North East Somerset for slouching in his seat whilst a quarter full commons debated last nights debate to trigger today’s motion to block a no-deal Brexit.
Mr Rees-Mogg, who has been a lifelong Eurosceptic, appeared to be rather casual in his seat after dealing with over an hour of Parliamentary questioning. This did not stop the Green party MP Caroline Lucas from criticising Mr Mogg’s posture and describing it as “contemptuous” and “the physical embodiment of arrogance”. These comments come against the backdrop of remain MP’s taking control of parliamentary time which is unheard of constitutionally.
What is also unconstitutional is the Commons taking legislature powers away for a British PM and handing them to foreign powers. However, the Labour MP Toby Perkins, pulled no punches on Mr Rees-Mogg’s conduct. He thought that this slouching showed that Mogg felt he was “born to rule and far too important to listen to anyone else’s view”. Many may criticise the criticisers for hypocrisy as a result of them failing to listen to the views of the 17.4 million British voters.
Some may suggest that the arrogance described by Mrs Lucas may be more appropriately applied to those campaigning for remain who seem to be overtly ignoring the biggest democratic exercise in British history. Mr Mogg is universally accepted by the elite class of MP’s as a stickler for parliamentary procedure, which makes hm the ideal candidate for his current role.
