One of our readers has been in touch to discuss events that happened at a recent hustings where Jacob Rees Mogg attended and others to push for Boris as leader.
As you can see below our reader got round to asking about The Tilbrook case:
They were effectively campaigning for us to vote for Boris – they firmly believe he knows they have to deliver Brexit and not some stitch up deal that ties us in to the EU (like May’s deals), and if they don’t then it is the end of the party. So it was good to know they understand the seriousness of it.
I got to ask about the Tilbrook case – and managed to get a good few words in about the seriousness and validity of the case (mentioned section 2 of the act) – I asked why they were not shouting about it from the roof tops. Jacob went into a lengthy legal explanation about why he believes the case doesn’t stand a chance, and that is why he doesn’t speak about it.
I had exhausted my time, HOWEVER, the guy after me did a follow up question to mine – and asked them that if Boris were elected would he assure us that the government would stop funding the case. It was a genuine light bulb moment for all of them – they hadn’t through about it, and firmly agreed. You could see that they were sincere in going to put it to Boris. They said it was the best point of the evening, and one of the reasons they did tours like this.
Spoke to the guy who asked the question after the meeting, and he thanked me for making them all aware of the case. Actually I had loads of people come up to me afterwards to thank me for the questions.
So – the good news is that JRM (someone who Boris listens to) is going to suggest defunding the case…and if he gets in, there’s a very real possibility that the government will stop all funding. They pointed out that the likes of Gina Miller will only come in to replace the funding…but…that will bring publicity, and until they can find the funds they will be on the ropes.
So overall, I think there was a great result from the evening. There’s nothing concrete, but better than nothing and something to look for if Boris is elected.
Our reader suggests Mr Rees Mogg says the case does not stand a chance and this is why he and others do not make a big deal of it. This is not good news for Mr Tilbrook and the supporters of this case as Mr Tilbrook appeals the initial verdict of the Judges that the case was ‘entirely without merit’
From a Brexit perspective though it is encouraging if they do decide to remove funding from fighting against it but alas we shall wait and see.
