The former Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn has been forced to apologise as a result of a photo emerging of him breaching the ‘Rule of Six’ at a dinner party. The picture shows Mr Corbyn, who is 71 and his wife Laura Alvarez, 51, around a nine-person table at a friend’s house. As per, the Coronavirus rules Mr Corbyn and his guests are now expected to face fines of £200 each.
The MP for Islington North has admitted he made a ‘mistake’. He also released a statement that said ‘I recently had dinner at a friend’s house where the number of guests eventually exceeded five. I understand that remaining at the dinner was a breach of the rule of six. I apologise for my mistake’.
These pictures emerged the same day as Boris Johnson pleaded with the nation to ‘follow the guidance’ in order to prevent a second ‘more costly’ lockdown national lockdown. Prime Minister Johnson said: ‘Let me just say what I’ve said to everybody, please everybody follow the guidance. Bearing in mind, you are doing it not just to protect your neighbour but ultimately someone that you could transmit the disease to that could end up infecting someone that you love. It is absolutely crucial that we stop the spread of this disease’.
Labour’s shadow minister for mental health, Rosena Allin-Khan has stated that Jeremy Corbyn “rightly should be paying the fine” for his breach of the current restrictions. UNN’s Oliver Down will keep you across developments on this story as we get them.
