John Bercow reveals failed plot to STOP Brexit

Controversial former speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow, has stated that the Remain campaigns best opportunity to stop Brexit was in October and that if people had worked together they could have stopped it.

According to the Pro-EU Magazine The New European:

Bercow was speaking at a gig in a community centre in Holland Park to raise money for a local charity when he answered questions on his time in the House of Commons overseeing the biggest political issue of modern times.

He claimed that a People’s Vote was possible back in October when Boris Johnson had hit a paralysis in parliament.

“A short-term coalition government to administer and deliver a People’s Vote might have been formed,” he is quoted by the Spectator as saying.

But he claimed that the failure was politicians – particularly the Lib Dems and Labour – not working together.

He said: “Jo Swinson wasn’t prepared to allow Jeremy Corbyn to be temporary prime minister. But the fear that this would lead to years and years of Corbyn and John McDonnell is for the birds.”

Bercow said that this failure stretched to the strategy of backing an election too.

He said that a “mirage” had led Swinson to believing that she could form part of a new government.

“Jo Swinson saw some evidence that she might win 60, 80 or 100 seats, and [there would be] every chance of a coalition government.”

He added: “Boris held his nerve”.

The former speaker, who missed out on a peerage in the New Year’s Honours list, is still convinced that Brexit could eventually be reversed.

He told the audience: “Brexit will hurt most those who have least. But the UK might re-join!”

This adds even more fuel to the flames that Bercow was in abuse of his position as Speaker of the House of Commons who is meant to be totally impartial throughout the process. Many on social media have said that not only should Bercow be forbidden from entering the Lords but he should receive charges for the way he abused the position of Speaker.

A Downing Street insider has suggested it will block a Labour plot to install much derided ex-Speaker John Bercow in the House of Lords today.

Jeremy Corbyn is said to have put forward the reviled former Commons custodian for a seat in the upper chamber, as well as a slew of other controversial appointments.

But No 10 suggested today that it would block any new attempt to place the outspoken former MP in the Lords as you can only nominate members of your own party.

A Spokesperson for the PM said: “It is a long-standing convention that leaders of the opposition can only nominate people representing their party for peerages.”

Boris Johnson refused to elevate Mr Bercow as is customary for a former Speaker, a move seen as a rebuke for his efforts to stall Brexit last year. This was the first time in 240 years that the speaker was not made a Lord.

Bercow became Tory MP for Buckingham in 1997 and represented the seat until the December election and according to tradition he was officially an independent and officially neutral. However, Bercow became a much despised figure for his attempts to thwart Brexit and he admitted after he stepped down he wanted to halt a WTO Brexit.

Bercow appeared on Sky News Election Coverage where he was paid a figure of around £45,000 but they suffered extremely low viewing numbers in the tens of thousands. It is also thought his speaking career will not be as lucrative as anticipated.
