Explosive news is coming out of central London. The Supreme court has ruled that the prorogation of Parliament by Boris Johnson was “unlawful, void and of no effect”. In practical terms, this means that Parliament is no longer prorogued and potentially could sit as early as tomorrow. Boris Johnson has received widespread condemnation from all sides. Nigel Farage has tweeted “The calling of a Queen’s speech and prorogation is the worst political decision ever. Dominic Cummings must go”.
The decision to prorogue parliament has without a doubt been a catastrophic blunder. Many feel the prorogation was an attempt to prevent anti no-deal legislation being passed. However, Conservative rebels and the opposition in the commons mobilised far faster than he anticipated. Given the situation that the Labour Party are at their conference and the Conservative party have their conference this week, this is a logistical nightmare as well as a constitutional crisis.
The outpouring of emotion and comment has been seismic. However, when contacted by UNN for comment the Brexit Party MEP Anne Widdecombe has been far more considered. Mrs Widdecombe stated, “We are holding fire until we have the government response”. When UNN gets further comment from Anne Widdecombe we will be sure to bring it to you. The government response will certainly be a central pivot point into how the situation moves forward.
A key talking point must be what happens from here. This is incredibly difficult to predict with absolute certainty. The opposition leaders have almost unanimously called for Mr Johnson’s resignation. However, given the fact that only two weeks ago these very same MPs blocked a general election some pay see this as slightly hypocritical. Tim Shipman the political editor at the Sunday Times, see’s this whole event as seismic constitutionally. Prior to the verdict, Mr Shipman stated “Regardless of the final ruling the judges have already set us on the path to an American style Supreme Court. In future appointments will become highly politicised”. Many will be extremely frustrated that unelected judges have overruled the democratically elected Prime Minister.
