Prime Minister Boris Johnson has today approved the use of Huawei technology in the building of Britain’s 5G network. He has come under fire from Nigel Farage, Steve Baker and many in the USA. UNN’s Oliver Down has been investigating and analysing the connotations of this and has come across some very interesting connections. A number of figures have had links with both the British government as well as Huawei. Given the fact that Huawei has been developing 5G technology since 2009, some may consider this extremely relevant. 

Sir Andrew Cahn held many government positions such as the minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1973-1979) right up to the Chief of Staff for Neil Kinnock, who was the Vice President of the EU Commission (1997-2000). In 2011 Mr Cahn became chairman of Huawei Technologies UK advisory board, this ceased in 2014. However, currently, Sir Andrew Cahn is currently the Non-executive director, Huawei Technologies (UK). UNN’s Oliver Down has not found it possible to obtain details for Sir Andrew Cahn to ask for comment. 

Another individual who has connections with both Huawei and the British government is John Suffolk, who is the Senior Vice President and the Global Cyber Security & Privacy Officer (GSPO) for Huawei. According to Huawei’s own website “ Prior to joining Huawei in 2011, Mr. Suffolk spent more than seven years in the UK Government, where he was Her Majesty’s Government CIO and CISO, leading the delivery of the Government’s strategy for the transformation of public services enabled by technology”. 

These links have been discussed on social media by the Twitter account @BeeAHoney_ who stated “@BorisJohnson has complied with Merkel/May/Sedwill wishes. Sod our main allies, eh? I can’t tell you how let down and disgusted I feel. Meanwhile; this bunch celebrate”. The Tweet was accompanied by a picture of Sir Andrew Cahn, John Suffolk, and Lord John Browne. 

Lord John Browne is the chairman of Huawei Technologies (UK) since 2015, having been “the government’s lead non-executive adviser to the civil service, a position he took up in 2010” as reported in the Financial Times. In 2018 Lord Browne took a leave of absence from the House of Lords. These connections are likely to concern many in Britain and UNN’s Oliver Down will be sure to alert a selection of MSM publications of his findings.
