Macron pleads with French People to end Christmas protest chaos

French President Emmanuel Macron has appealed directly to transport unions and the wider French public to suspend strikes that threaten travel chaos over the Christmas holidays.

Whilst on an oversees visit to the Ivory Coast, Mr Macron suggested the strikers should: “observe a truce out of respect for families and family life. Strike action is justifiable and protected by the constitution, but I believe there are moments in the life of a nation when it is also good to call a truce to respect families and the lives of families.”

Two weeks of strikes over planned pension reforms have caused widespread disruption across France.

Philippe Martinez, the secretary general of the General Confederation of Labour (CGT), said the strike would only be halted:

if the government withdraws its plan of pension reform. Otherwise the strikers will decide what they have to do Thursday or Friday. The union members of the CGT will also spend Christmas with their children, with their families.

This is a serious matter, and I think that the government cannot always transfer the responsibility to those who react because they consider that the project is bad.
