Cadets at a military preparation college have given up their time to clean up a war memorial left in a disgusting state by climate change protesters .
Teenagers from Bangor Military Preparation College cleaned up the town’s War Memorial after protesters belonging to Extinction Rebellion North Wales and Bangor Climate strike chalked slogans on the monument during a demonstration last Friday.
Centre manager Ryan Roberts took 20 learners to clean up, giving all the brasses and name plates a good once over and making sure all graffiti had been removed.
“I said to our learners ‘how would you like it if that commemorated one of your relatives?'”
Extinction Rebellion apologised after a local paper brought it to their attention.
In a statement they said: “We sincerely apologise for any offence caused the chalk around the war memorial following Friday’s march and strike for climate action.
“We had a much larger turnout than anticipated and there was some spill over into the sacred space of the war memorial.
“In the enthusiasm to spread messages of hope for a better future, a few people drew and wrote in chalk around the memorial.
“This was done in the spirit of seriousness, love and hope, but we recognise how it must have appeared and apologise for that.”
They added “no disrespect to either veterans or the fallen was intended by the chalk writing or drawings”.
